Humanize Your Approach: Treat People as Individuals to Promote Exponential Return

Updated: 6 days ago

As a leader, it’s easy to get caught up in the demands of deadlines, metrics, and performance goals. But in the rush to drive results, have you ever stopped to ask yourself: Do the people on my team feel like valued individuals—or just interchangeable parts in a system?

I’ve spent years working with leaders and organizations, and I’ve seen this play out time and time again. The best-intentioned leaders unknowingly create environments where people feel unseen, unmotivated, and burned out—not because they don’t care, but because they’re focused on Metrics, KPIs, and efficiency that often take center stage, while the human experience gets pushed to the margins.

My experience has been that if you want to build truly engaged, innovative, and high-performing teams, leading with emotional intelligence is going to be critical—starting with humanizing your approach.

The good news? Small, intentional shifts can completely transform the way your team experiences leadership. Here’s where to start:

1. See Beyond the Role

Your team members are more than their job descriptions. Each person brings unique strengths, aspirations, and challenges to the table. I’ve watched organizations change overnight when leaders take the time to understand what motivates their people, what they struggle with, and what they value. That foundation of trust makes all the difference.

2. Personalize Your Leadership

Not everyone thrives under the same leadership style. Some need structure, while others crave autonomy. The best leaders don’t force people into a rigid mold—they adapt, meeting individuals where they are and creating the conditions for them to succeed. When I coach executives, this is often one of the biggest mindset shifts: realizing that fair leadership doesn’t mean treating everyone the same—it means treating them according to their needs.

3. Recognize the Cost of Dehumanization

I’ve worked with plenty of companies where disengagement and burnout are rampant. Without exception, these are the places where leaders see employees as resources rather than people. But when leaders prioritize humanity over efficiency, engagement skyrockets, retention improves, and the whole culture shifts.

4. Take Small but Meaningful Actions

Humanizing leadership isn’t about grand gestures—it’s about everyday moments. Ask real questions and listen to the answers. Recognize individual contributions. Show genuine care for people’s well-being. The strongest teams aren’t built through complex strategies—they’re built through consistent, human moments of connection.

The Leadership Challenge

Take a moment to reflect: Are you leading in a way that makes people feel valued, or are they struggling to find meaning in their work?

At the Institute for UNLearning, we help leaders break free from outdated management models and cultivate the emotional intelligence required for transformational leadership. If you’re ready to deepen your impact, let’s talk.

What’s one way you humanize your leadership? Drop your thoughts in the comments—I’d love to hear from you.
